Skills Hub

Fields of Mistria tracks your progress through nine core skills: farming, fishing, archaeology, cooking, ranching, woodcrafting, blacksmithing, mining, and combat. Every hoe swing, cast, dig, cooked dish, animal chore, crafted furniture piece, forged tool, ore node, and monster kill pushes one or more of these meters forward. Understanding how skills interact is the difference between a sluggish first season and a farm that funds bridges, bag upgrades, and greenhouse plans before winter bites.

How skills level up

Each skill gains experience when you perform related actions. Farming rises from planting, watering, and harvesting crops on your plot. Fishing improves when you land fish from rivers, ponds, the beach, or mine pools — including diving catches. Archaeology advances through digging artifact spots with your shovel. Cooking levels when you finish recipes at the hearth or kitchen stations. Ranching tracks animal care, milking, shearing, and coop or barn upgrades. Woodcrafting grows from carpentry benches and furniture sets. Blacksmithing increases when you smelt ingots and craft tools at March’s anvil. Mining and combat only rise inside The Mines, where breaking rocks and defeating monsters feed separate pools.

Skill levels unlock perk tiers at milestones (levels 1, 15, 30, 45, and beyond toward 60). You do not receive perks automatically — you must spend essence at a Caldarus shrine to purchase them. That makes essence the real currency of specialization.

Essence and Caldarus shrines

Essence appears as glowing orbs when you complete skill-related tasks. The game auto-collects them; check the counter beneath your Tesserae in the top-right UI. After Eiland helps restore the Caldarus statue on your farm, you can interact with it to browse perk trees for most outdoor skills. A second dragon statue inside The Mines handles mining and combat perks once you unlock the dungeon.

Essence also fuels woodcrafting recipes, refining projects, and retrieving items from mist spots — so hoarding every orb for perks is not always optimal. Still, early essence should usually go toward perks that save stamina or multiply output. Our skills and essence guide breaks down drop rates, shrine locations, and tier costs in detail.

Which skill pages to read first

New players should skim this hub, then dive into skills and essence for the shrine tutorial loop. Follow with best early perks so your first twenty essence purchases accelerate farming and fishing income instead of vanity bonuses. Once The Mines open at Town Rank Stone, read combat tips before pushing past floor ten without food or perk planning.

Cross-linking other wiki sections keeps your build coherent. Controls affect how fast you earn skill XP — see keyboard controls and recommended rebinds so repeated tool use does not burn your wrists. Guides like how to upgrade tools and how to unlock the mines gate the blacksmithing and mining trees. The crop planner pairs naturally with farming perks that refund seeds or widen harvest areas.

Long-term planning

Mid-game farmers often rush fishing perks for treasure chests and legendary fish, then pivot to woodcrafting automation statues once essence stockpiles grow. Min-maxers push combat perks before deep floor attempts where fainting loses a day. There is no respec fee published — choose perks that match your current season goals and accept that later essence can fill gaps.

For controller players earning essence on Steam Deck, confirm controller mappings and bind Tool Use (Repeated) so skill grinding feels painless. FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

How many skills are in Fields of Mistria?

There are nine core skills: farming, fishing, archaeology, cooking, ranching, woodcrafting, blacksmithing, mining, and combat. Outdoor skills share the farm Caldarus shrine; mining and combat use the mine statue.

What is essence used for?

Essence primarily buys skill perks at Caldarus shrines. It also appears in woodcrafting, refining, and mist-spot retrieval recipes, so keep some in reserve beyond perk shopping.

When can I start buying perks?

After the story restores Caldarus on your farm — typically early Spring Year 1 once Eiland clears the tree blocking the statue. You need essence from any skill activity before purchases appear.

Do mining and combat perks use the same essence pool?

Yes. Essence is one shared currency displayed under Tesserae. Mining and combat perk menus live at the dragon statue inside The Mines instead of the farm shrine.
